The differential diagnoses of trigger thumb are thumb-in-palm deformity, hyperextension deformity of the metacarpophalangeal joint, thumb hypoplasia and congenital stiffness of the interphalangeal joint. The knowledge of the typical clinical signs of these different diseases enables the surgeon to make the correct diagnosis, leading to the right treatment.

Key words: clasped thumb; congenital stiffness of the interphalangeal joint; congenital thumb disorder; hyperextension deformity; hyperflexible thumb; pollex rigidus; thumb hypoplasia; thumb-in-palm deformity; trigger thumb.
